Oxford International School kicked off its STEM Week, beginning on September 18, 2023, with a captivating presentation by the Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá (UTP). The presentation, conducted by a UTP representative, captivated the audience's attention from the very beginning. As the seniors gathered in the auditorium, they were prompted to think about the first thoughts that crossed their minds when they heard terms like "Artificial Intelligence" and "Chat GPT." To make this introspective exercise more interactive, the students were given the opportunity to share their responses on a website, which instantly displayed their thoughts on the big screen.

The UTP representative then dived into the topic of whether AI would replace humans. He aptly addressed this common concern by highlighting that AI serves as a complement rather than a replacement to human capabilities. This perspective was reassuring, as it emphasized the symbiotic relationship between humans and AI, dispelling the myth of complete AI domination.
Furthermore, the presentation delved into the vast applications of AI in various fields. The students were introduced to how AI plays a pivotal role in medicine and law, enhancing efficiency and aiding professionals in providing better services. The concept of AI-generated art, often known as "AI art," was also explored, shedding light on the creative potential of artificial intelligence.
One of the most engaging segments of the presentation revolved around AI and machine learning. The students were given insights into the technical aspects of these fields, demonstrating how algorithms and data analysis are transforming industries and shaping the future.
AI's presence in our daily lives was another critical topic covered. From voice assistants like Siri and Alexa to recommendation algorithms on streaming platforms, AI has seamlessly integrated into our routines. The audience was also treated to a thought-provoking discussion on the age-old debate: "AI vs. Humans." This segment highlighted the areas where AI excels, such as data processing and analysis, while emphasizing the irreplaceable human qualities of creativity, empathy, and critical thinking.
What made this presentation truly exceptional was its interactive nature. The students were encouraged to ask questions and engage in discussions throughout the session, making it a dynamic learning experience. The UTP representative's ability to simplify complex concepts and keep the students engaged was commendable.
To conclude the presentation, the seniors had the privilege to a brief conversation with Eidrian Perez, a former Oxford International School senior who graduated last year, who had shared a fair share of his experiences as a contestant traveling and competing in math competitions.
