Teacher Francisco Morgado, 8th grade’s science teacher, was kind enough to answer some questions for The Source. He talked a little bit about his experience being a teacher in OIS, like how long he’s been here and what he would like his students to learn.

This interview was conducted by Virginia Espino.

Virginia: To start off, Could you tell us what you like the most about being a teacher?

Teacher Francisco Morgado: Well, since I started here, I've really wanted to make an impact in some people’s lives. And I think this is the best way to do it.

Virginia: How many years have you been teaching in OIS?

Teacher Francisco: I came here in 2020, when the pandemic just came out for the first time. It was very challenging back then. So, I’m still here.

Virginia: Yeah, I was one of your students.

Teacher Francisco: Yeah, I remember you. *He laughs*

Virginia: Would you like to teach any other grade, like 9th?

Teacher Francisco: Absolutely. Yeah, I would like to teach other grades, like 9th. Actually, my eight graders right now are begging me to be in ninth grade next year, but I’m still thinking about it.

Virginia: And now we have a very controversial question your students might want to know: What is your favorite class?

Teacher Francisco: My favorite class... so that’s one of the secrets that I still keep for myself. Yeah, I would rather keep that answer for myself.

Virginia: On to the next question, why do you like teaching science?

Teacher Francisco: I chose this subject as one of my favorite subjects to teach because it’s really good to talk about the natural environment and all of that.

Virginia: Now we’re going to get into some of the questions your students might want to know, one of them being: What is a normal day like as a teacher?

Teacher Francisco: Well, it’s very challenging being a teacher; all days from Monday to Friday and even on weekends, when you have to check all the emails and the messages and everything. But I think the most challenging thing is when you have to help the students deal with their personal problems sometimes, because it’s not all about the academic thing, it’s also more than that. That’s what I think is the most challenging thing.

Virginia: What is something you would like your students to get better at?

Teacher Francisco: I would like that they keep improving, being genuine with themselves, being raw and speaking their truth. I think it is the most important thing for a person of their age.

Virginia: Now a general question for all OIS students: What is some advice you can give us?

Teacher Francisco: You have to trust yourselves first of all; I think that’s the most important thing. If you don’t know anything about any subject, the simple thing is to do some research on it; that’s the advice I always give. Learn everything that you have in your surroundings; that is the best way to understand what you’re working on in school.
